As far as accessories go, there are none quite as versatile as our frames. They are the perfect addition to any outfit and have the potential to bring together an entire look. Heading to a festival? Opt for on-trend cat eye frames. Putting in long hours at the office? Go with a set of frames that are comfortable and minimalistic. Want a head-turning look? Don’t be afraid of bright and bold frames!

However, as much as we love our frames, it can sometimes be difficult to choose a set that is not just on-trend, but that is also flattering and stylish. To help you better select your next set of frames, Style Magazine spoke with Madonna Rigney of Madonna Rigney Optometry to learn her top tips for choosing the right frames for your face.

When it comes to selecting the right set of frames for you, nose-fit is the single most important factor overall. If it’s too tight or too loose, it will feel uncomfortable and distracting. Make sure the frames sit on your nose comfortably and without squeezing or sliding. Of course, your optometrist is able to help you with this step – they are the experts, after all!

Selecting the right proportions for your frames is important as it helps to balance the glasses with your face. To keep it simple, the face and frame proportions should match when it comes to glasses. For sunglasses, however, the frames should be slightly larger as you require greater coverage.

When it comes to selecting a set of frames that best suits your face, a good rule to follow is to choose the opposite of your facial features. Take into consideration the shape of the top and bottom half of your face. If the top half of your face is wider than the bottom, do the opposite with your frame and vice-versa.

For example, if you have slightly rounder features or face shape, it’s a good idea to opt for angular frames that draw the attention to the top half of your face. This helps to balance out full cheeks and a rounded chin. Alternatively, if you have a square face or strong jaw and forehead, round frames will help to soften your jawline and bone structure.
